I Feel Like Nothing Is Worth It Anymore

Hi, I’ve been struggling with social anxiety and depression for a while now but lately it’s become unbearable. I feel like life isn’t worth it anymore. I have no interests or dreams. Even the few things that I once use to like seem pointless now. I’m in college but I don’t like what I’m doing and I feel like nothing could really interest me enough to major in. I just feel empty and life seems really meaningless. I do not know what to do about it and I don’t even feel the motivation to help myself. Even when I don’t feel anxious life is boring and dull. I’ve tried to get into something that could make me happy, but truly nothing is able to make me feel interest and motivation. (From Romania)A: While I certainly hear the despair and pain you are in, I am also aware that you are still reaching out to us here. The part of you that sent the email is the part that knows you’re feeling so down now can change. Otherwise you wouldn’t have bothered. So let’s address the part of you that has hop…

South Korea on the verge of unlimited energy breakthrough

(NaturalNews) Scientists in South Korea have reportedly made a breakthrough toward harnessing an unlimited source of safe and clean energy via nuclear fusion. The Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) reactor apparently set a world’s record recently by holding superheated plasma in a steady state for 70 seconds. If implemented into widespread use, the nuclear...

California just legalized child prostitution beginning Jan 1... pimps rejoice over whole new way to exploit children

(NaturalNews) Our world is so twisted today that “fake news” is deliberately written by the Washington Post and New York Times to sound like it’s real, but real news is so bizarre that it seems fabricated at first glance. Such is the case with California’s new law — SB 1322 — that officially legalizes child...

Police-Led Addiction Program Proves Successful

About 95 percent of individuals who came to the Gloucester Police Department in Massachusetts for help getting addiction treatment were placed in detoxification or substance-use treatment programs during the first year of a widely publicized initiative aimed at combating the opioid epidemic, according to a new report by Boston University researchers.Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the report notes that the “high direct-referral rate” by Gloucester police exceeds that of hospital-based initiatives designed to provide immediate access to detoxification and treatment.“Despite the many barriers, including previous arrests, that may prevent persons with an opioid-use disorder from engaging with police, 376 people sought help in the first year of this program,” according to the report.Researchers credited a number of factors for the program’s success, including the motivation of participants to enter treatment, work by police to find placements and establish a relationship…

Hearing Problems in Schizophrenia Patients Tied to Specific Brain Receptor

A lesser-known but common and debilitating symptom in schizophrenia patients is the inability to hear subtle changes in pitch. Now a new study by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) shows that this condition may be due to dysfunctional N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) brain receptors. The researchers say this hearing issue may be improved by combining auditory training exercises with a drug that targets NMDA receptors.“Slight variations in our tone of voice are an important way of communicating emotions, such as happiness or sadness,” said lead author Joshua T. Kantrowitz, MD, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at CUMC.“This inability to detect subtle changes in pitch can also make it difficult to “sound out” words while reading, with over 70 percent of patients meeting criteria for dyslexia and further exacerbating communication problems in social and work situations. But while psychiatrists have recommended medications for symptom control, these treatments ha…

Should I Get Off My Antidepressants?

I have been suffering from depression for four years and have been on medication and attending off and on therapy for about two now. I have noticed my bad days aren’t so bad now, but my good days aren’t as good either. About 9 months ago I started a new medication and have noticed a lack of appetite, sex drive, and passion for anything in general, as well as consistent nausea when I do eat, so I’ve been considering weening off of them. I have a family history of mental disorders, and have been diagnosed with Major Depression, but I’m tired of feeling numb. Do you believe discontinuing my medication would be beneficial for me?A. It could be beneficial or it could be harmful to stop taking your antidepressants. You should consider both the pros and cons before making a decision. Some of the pros might be that you would no longer experience the side effects of the medication. You may no longer feel numb. This is known as emotional blunting and it is common among certain antidepressant med…

How We Get Our ETA Right or Wrong

To get to work on time, people tend to rely on estimates of how long the drive took last time. But different outside influences such as how many songs played on the radio last time can skew our perception of time, causing even the best-laid plans to go awry, according to time-management researchers at Washington University in St. Louis.“Our results suggest time estimates of tasks that we need to incorporate into our later plans, like a drive to an appointment, are often based on our memory of how long it took us to perform that same drive previously,” said Dr. Emily Waldum, principal author of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher in psychological and brain sciences.“Even if you think you estimated the duration of events accurately, external factors unrelated to that event can bias time estimates,” she said. “Something as simple as the number of songs you heard play on your phone during a run can influence whether you over- or under-estimate the duration of the run.”Furthermore, gro…

Web-based Cognitive Therapy for Insomnia

Insomnia and related excessive daytime sleepiness is a troubling trend in the United States. Now, a new study finds that web-based cognitive behavior therapy is effective and can help adults sleep better.
The finding is salient as insomnia has been associated with a range of physical and mental conditions, and adversely affects quality of life, productivity at work, and school performance.
Researchers discovered the adults assigned to receive the fully automated and interactive web-based Sleep Healthy Using the Internet (SHUTi) intervention had improved sleep compared with those adults just given access to a patient education website with information about insomnia.
The study findings appear online in JAMA Psychiatry.
Lee M. Ritterband, Ph.D., of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, led the clinical trial. His team evaluated the efficacy of the intervention from nine weeks to one year and included 303 adults.
The study is significant for although cognitive behavior therapy …

Psychiatric Conditions May Up Risk of Opioid Use

A wide range of pre-existing psychiatric and behavioral conditions, as well as the use of psychoactive drugs, could be important risk factors leading to long-term use of opioid pain medications, according to new research. For the study, published in PAIN, the official publication of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), researchers used a nationwide insurance database to identify 10.3 million patients who filed insurance claims for opioid prescriptions between 2004 and 2013.“We found that pre-existing psychiatric and behavioral conditions and psychoactive medications were associated with subsequent claims for prescription opioids,” said Patrick D. Quinn, Ph.D., of Indiana University. The association appears stronger for long-term opioid use, and especially for patients with a previous history of substance use disorders, the researchers discovered. The study also suggests that some outcomes viewed as harmful outcomes of opioid use — substance use disorders, depressio…

Why Am I Keeping Old Messages and Social Media from an Emotionally Abusive Ex?

From the U.S.: I left an emotionally abusive relationship about one year ago. After going through therapy and doing some reading and research, I’ve read about the importance of making a completely clean break. Though I haven’t spoken to the individual in over a year, I’ve left connections on social media open and haven’t deleted text messages from the person. After the breakup, there were several instances where he tried to harass me in the first six months of our breakup. (However, it has been quiet recently). Because of this, I’m hesitant to delete this information from my phone and sever these ties, especially if I ever need to take legal action against the individual. Is there anything wrong with leaving these ties open? Am I better off deleting these messages and severing these ties? And, if I do sever the ties and something happens, am I setting myself up for further issues legally? (Is there anything wrong with keeping a record?)Thanks for your help!A: It sounds to me that you a…

When is the Truth a Lie?

The ability to deceive someone by telling the truth is not only possible, it has a name — paltering. It’s common in negotiations and among politicians, but those who palter can do serious harm to their reputations, according to a new study.“To date, research has primarily focused on two types of deception: Lying by commission — the active use of false statements — and lying by omission — the passive act of misleading by failing to disclose relevant information,” said lead author Todd Rogers, PhD, of Harvard University. “In this study, we make a novel contribution to the deception literature by identifying a third, and common, form of deception. Rather than misstating facts or failing to provide information, paltering involves actively making truthful statements to create a mistaken impression.”Paltering is commonly used by politicians, according to Rogers.“Politicians often palter when the truthful answer to a question would be harmful,” he said. “When candidates get questions they don…

Young Children Use Smell to Help Make Social Decisions

New research reveals that children begin using smell to help guide their responses to emotionally-expressive faces around the age of 5.“Even though we may not be aware of it, the sense of smell influences how adults process emotional and social information to guide their decisions and behavior. Our findings establish that, beginning at the age of 5, smell also influences children’s emotional decisions,” said Valentina Parma, PhD,  a cognitive neuroscientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia and one of the study’s authors. In the study, published in Developmental Science, 140 children between 3 and 11 years old were invited to participate in the research while visiting a local children’s museum. Each child was exposed to one of three odors — either rose, fish, or blank —  for three seconds. Immediately afterwards, the child saw a screen containing photographs of two faces, one happy and the other disgusted, and was asked to select one. Both facial expressions were from…

Insomnia & Substance Abuse

For the past two months, I’ve been plagued by insomnia (or what I believe to be insomnia; not diagnosed) every waking second I’m breathing on this earth. And this is really bad. I’m only sleeping two hours a day, maybe sometimes three, and then crashing on the sixth or seventh day sleeping around eight hours.I’ve also been abusing a lot of cocaine, LSD and oxycodone lately – just because I’m bored, really bored. To be fair, I only do cocaine maybe twice a week, and oxycodone just a few times as it helped me fall asleep some times, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore.I do cocaine to be social at school. When high on it, I’m talking for hours about anything to anyone. It makes me people wanna be around me. It’s wonderful. It’s pure bliss. And as described above, I only did oxycodone a few times as a sleeping agent. With LSD, I’ve done maybe 8,000 micrograms of it, meaning I’ve done about 80 hits. This was the over the span of three months, I believe. I stopped taking it as it begun to be…

Rock Music May Hinder Concentration in Men

For men working on tasks requiring high levels of concentration, listening to rock music — as opposed to classical music or the sounds of an operating room — appears to hinder concentration and may lead to more mistakes, according to a new study by researchers at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Music. Music and/or noise was found to have no effect on women’s performance, though they generally performed better than men at the game involved in the study.According to the researchers, music is reportedly played up to 72 percent of the time in operating rooms during surgery. However, experts are divided on whether it has a beneficial effect. Some research, for example, has suggested that Jamaican music and Hip-Hop increases operating speed and surgical instrument manipulation. However, in another study, one in four anesthetists — who are responsible for keeping patients sedated — said music reduced their vigilance. For the new study, the researchers asked 352 volunteers at …
